HOT TOPICS to get you thinking Being a Christian at work. scroll for new web link In some churches we hear a lot of talk about Sunday Christians and you probably know what they are talking about. They mean people who are ‘very Christian’ while at church on a Sunday but during the week you would not recognise tem as being any different than anyone else. Often, they will be very nice people who say and do all the correct things. These can be things which impress people. Thinks which do not rock the boat or challenge the understanding of a Bible passage. Being a seven day Christian also means being a Christian at work. The doesn’t mean that you should be so odd that you do not fit it. There are some differences which should be obvious to the casual observer. Although, to be fair, there will be many other workers who do many of these things and they believe in another god or in no god. Some signs to look for in others and also portray in our lives. Honesty – devotion to telling the truth, integrity, probity Truthful – being in the habit of telling the truth, faithfulness to high moral standards Kind – given to or made with heedful anticipation of the needs and happiness of others, having or marked by sympathy and consideration for others Fair minded – marked by justice, honesty, and freedom from bias, open, straightforward; balanced, rational, reasonable Timekeeping – arriving on time, not leaving early, meeting deadlines. None of the above are particularly ‘Christian’ traits although they are traits that a Christian should show. From my experience I find that other people recognise and value these traits and in time may ask why you do these things. If they don’t ask it doesn’t matter because these are simply the traits we should have all the time. Our role at work is not to evangelise although we should take the opportunity to share our faith if the opportunity arises. Just remember if we take too much time out from our paid work to evangelism then we are stealing from our employer which is not good. Always keep a balance. Our employer pays for our services, our knowledge and expertise and our time. It is only fair and right that we give him these. |
